They began to sling handfuls of the thick gray stuff at Lib and I so we dashed to the river’s edge and dove underwater. They fell laughing into the water too and before long their mud-skin melted away.

Ben noted that the sun was getting low in the sky and so was the level of the water so he chauffeured us in shifts back across the shrinking river. It would soon be time for dinner. When the last of us reached the dock, we saw Drew watching us from the covered deck.

“You guys better hurry inside!” he urged.

“Why?” Josh asked, are we in trouble?”

“Cause!” he blurted. “It’s dinnertime, and the Wampus Cat will come out soon!” Ben laughed and Drew turned and ran toward the house.

“What’s a Wampus Cat?” asked Libbie.
