The flat
black eyes of the two
dogs fixed keenly on
him.
As Burke
stared across the
street, the dogs
remained exactly where
they were. Their
attention was focused
raptly on Burke’s
house alone, as if they
were waiting for
something that they
already knew was going
to happen there.
Burke
hurriedly pressed the
drapes closed and
stepped back on shaky
legs, unnerved by what
he had just seen
outside.
Gradually,
despite his old
convictions, and against
all his rational will,
he was starting to
believe. And be afraid
of the witches.
