“Have you been having a little trouble in the barracks, Boom-Boom?” he asked rhetorically shortly thereafter, allowing me the luxury of a little time to compose myself.
“No, Sir!” I answered, unconvincingly; I was never a good liar.
“You’re lying, aren’t you, Boom-Boom?”
I didn’t answer.
“Would you squeal on a fellow maggot, Boom-Boom? Rat on another platoon member?”
“No, Sir.”
He wasn’t surprised by my answer, but I could tell by his face that he was intrigued by this line of interrogation and wanted to pursue it further.
“Why not, Boom-Boom? Why not squeal on a fellow maggot?”
